When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

From the get go, I was always a creative child. Always wanted to paint on something, draw on all surfaces, and take a picture of whatever I came across. Now that doesn't me I always had it figured out though, I still don't. It took a long time to convince myself this was okay and then decide what medium I was most passionate about. It's about telling stories for me. Expressing experiences in the best way possible.

How does your personal story/background influence your work?

I think my background influences my work in too many ways to list. Each person has such a unique view of the world and no one else's is the same. Being able to recognize this, and be okay with people not "getting" it or even loving your ideas more than you do is an important part of artistry in any medium. The way I grew up, the places I grew up in, people I lived with, the education I had all make up "me", and thus my art as an extension of "me".

What advice do you have for young or aspiring artists?

Just get started! Don't let anything, especially your own mind, persuade you that you're not good enough or that you'll never figure it out. You'll only make it, only get better, if you start trying. Do your best and don't get discouraged when you mess up. Everyone messes up. You'd be surprised by how many of your favorite artists have royally screwed up certain things, they just don't broadcast it. If you want it, do it.
